Powder Coating & Anodizing Masking Guide: When to Use Silicone Plugs or High-Temperature PET Tape

For metal, hardware and electronics manufacturers, poor masking during surface finishing often leads to scrap, rework and delayed shipments.
Process engineers frequently wonder which masking solution fits their workflow: tapered silicone plugs or high-temperature PET tape?

Tapered Silicone Masking Plugs

Best for sealing blind holes, threaded ports and circular openings.

  • Reusable across multiple heat cycles, cutting consumable cost for mass runs
  • Tapered design fits a range of hole sizes and reduces inventory SKUs
  • Creates a tight seal against powder, anodizing electrolyte and plating liquid
  • Not ideal for flat edges; performance declines above 230°C

High-Temperature PET Masking Tape

Best for masking flat surfaces, sharp edges and contour lines.

  • Clean peel after curing, no sticky residue left
  • Flexible for narrow edges and gentle curves; supports custom slit widths
  • Mostly single-use, not cost-efficient for repeated hole sealing
  • Prone to lifting if parts are not properly degreased

Quick Selection Checklist

  • Seal holes / threads → Tapered silicone stoppers
  • Mask edges and outlines → PET high-temperature tape
  • Prototyping / small batches → Test both options
  • High-temperature curing (>220°C) → Verify heat rating first

A frequent oversight is matching masking parts only by dimension, without checking oven temperature and process chemistry. A plug working for powder coating may fail in hard anodizing.
